On Wednesday 10th October 2012 Orlaith Treacy, Noelle Collins & Aoife Cox from Occupy Space in Limerick gave a talk as part of the Making Space Dialogues on Artist Run Initiatives. They discussed Occupy Space an artist-led, non-profit gallery and project space which they run in Limerick City centre.
'Occupy Space was originally constructed, organised and run by the 12 members of Wickham Street Studios. These artists felt that much of the significant contemporary art practice in Limerick was either facilitated by large, formal institutions or was provided by organisations within commercial, media-specific or traditional art contexts.
It was clear that there was not enough relevant contemporary art culture for many recent graduates and emerging artists to stay in Limerick to develop their careers. Occupy Space was established in response to this situation.
Since the first opening in December 2009, Occupy Space has hosted well over 30 projects and exhibitions. The programme has included solo and curated exhibitions by emerging and established artists, an annual Graduate Residency Award, Occupy Paper, and a variety of artists talks. Occupy Space also hosts extramural events such as regular Videogram Limerick nights, seminars and live performances.'

A large crowd showed up for the talk which was really interesting with a great question and answer session after. We would like to take the opportunity to thank Occupy Space for taking part in the Making Space Dialogues and for all those that attended the talks and support the g

Occupy Space
- Provide a space relevant to emerging and established contemporary artists alike, unhindered by a commercial context.
- Provide opportunities to artists to exhibit and experiment in a professional context.
- Programme a full calendar of strong exhibitions, to sustain the energy and significance of the space.
- Engage in critical dialogue with the wider visual art community in Limerick and beyond.
- Offer Limerick audiences interaction with interesting artists who would otherwise not be shown in Limerick City.
