Making Space - Public Art Event 2011Athlone Civic Square - Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th May 2011
This was an experimental art project, by organizing this event we created networks of local business, artists, art groups and other organizations. This network played a fundamental role in developing the art community in Athlone. We challenged the feelings of isolation felt by artists living in small towns and rural areas. We created an alternative place for contemporary art other then the typically city epicenters of art. We offered artists the opportunity to show case their work in the town and gave the public a chance to participate in this art event. Athlone is a large town with potential, a blank canvas.

This art event was an intervention, ‘making space’ for contemporary art in Athlone town. Having surveyed spaces and places in Athlone as potential venues, or sites for interventions. We chose the Civic Square as the site for the event, by making this place a space for art we changed the function and the everyday uses of it temporarily.
The work of 21 contemporary visual artists were showcased in this area. There was a night time film screening on the Saturday night from 10pm to 11pm where a selection of artistic film and videos were showcased. There was a covered area with seating to act as a social hub, where the public could meet the artists, and where free workshops took place. Types of artwork show were film, photography, sound, installation, sculpture and other mediums. Weekend of events included artist talks, performances, film screenings, digital installations and sound performances.
The "Everyday Interrupted" Booklet was conceived and directed by Lorna Kincaid to mark the first Making Space public art event in Athlone
